Border-Line Wealthy: February 2026

1. 📢 Latest News: Global Tax Season Kickoff

Tax laws change every year, and for expats, you often have to deal with two different governments at once. Here is what you need to know right now:

🇺🇸 US Expats: The IRS is Open

As of January 26, 2026, the IRS officially started processing 2025 tax returns.

  • The Context: If you’re expecting a refund, filing early is the best way to get that money back into your pocket. If you owe money, you still have until June (for most expats living abroad) to pay, but getting the paperwork done now prevents a last-minute scramble.

  • Action: Use the IRS online "Where’s My Refund?" tool after you file to keep tabs on your cash.

🇨🇦 Canadian Expats: NETFILE is Coming

The CRA (Canada Revenue Agency) has announced that February 23, 2026, is the big day. This is the earliest you can send your return electronically.

  • The Context: You might be tempted to file today, but wait! Many banks and employers don't send out your "slips" (the forms showing your income) until mid-February. If you file without them, you’ll have to do the work all over again.

  • Action: Create a "Tax 2025" folder on your computer today and drop every digital receipt or income slip in there as they arrive.

🇬🇧 UK Expats: The "Digital" Shift

If you earn over £50,000, a major change called Making Tax Digital (MTD) starts on April 6, 2026.

  • The Context: The UK government wants to move away from old-school spreadsheets. They now require you to use "compatible software" to report your income. If you aren't prepared, you could face "non-compliance" headaches.

  • Action: Reach out to your accountant or check the GOV.UK website to see if your current way of tracking money is "MTD-ready."

🇪🇺 EU & Spain: The Crypto Crackdown

A new rule called DAC8 started on January 1, 2026. It allows EU countries to share information about who is trading crypto across borders. Specifically in Spain, the Modelo 721 form is due by March 31.

  • The Context: The "wild west" of crypto is ending. Governments are now matching exchange data with tax returns. If you hold crypto on a foreign platform (like Coinbase or Binance) while living in Spain, you likely need to report it.

  • Action: Download your 2025 transaction history from your crypto exchanges now. Don't wait until March when the websites often slow down!

💰 Money Saving Tip: The "Smart Housing" Strategy

Rent is likely your biggest monthly cost. If you can lower it even by 15%, that’s thousands of dollars back in your pocket every year.

The "Three-Stop" Rule

We all want to live in the "heart of the action," but city centers are priced for tourists and wealthy short-term renters.

  • The Strategy: Pick the subway or bus line that goes to your work or favorite hangout. Follow that line out three stops away from the center.

  • The Result: Usually, the neighborhood is quieter, the grocery stores are cheaper, and the rent can be 20% to 30% lower. A 10-minute train ride could save you $500 a month.

Furnish for "Pennies"

Buying new furniture in a foreign country is expensive and a hassle to move later.

  • The Strategy: Expats are a transient group. Every year in May and June, thousands of people leave their host countries. They can’t fit their dining table in a suitcase!

  • Action: Check Facebook groups like "Expats in Madrid" or "Berlin Buy & Sell." You will see people giving away high-quality furniture for almost nothing (or even for free) just because they need the apartment empty by Friday.

Beware the "All-Inclusive" Rent

Landlords love to offer "utility-included" rent to expats because it sounds easy.

  • The Strategy: This is often a "Lazy Tax." The landlord calculates the highest possible electricity bill and adds a little extra for themselves.

  • Action: Ask to see the actual bills from the previous tenant. If the apartment has bad insulation (leaky windows or thin walls), you’ll spend a fortune on heating. If the bills were high for the last person, they’ll be high for you too. Use those high bills to negotiate a lower rent!

🚀 Product Update: Building the Future of Expat Finance

We’ve been busy! January was our biggest month for releases, and everything we built came directly from your suggestions.

1. Advisor Marketplace (with secure sharing built in)

Finding a tax pro or financial advisor who truly understands expat life is hard, and it can get expensive fast. Many of you told us the worst part is not just the price, it is the back and forth, the unclear scope, and having to send sensitive documents over email.

What it is: We built the first and only Aequify Advisor Marketplace to help you find experienced expat-focused advisors in one place. We reviewed 100+ applications and handpicked 6 advisors (3 live now, 3 being added soon).

Why it helps you:

  • Know the fit upfront: See what countries and situations they support before you message them.

  • Fewer surprises: See pricing and services clearly, before you commit.

  • Safer payments: Your payment is handled inside Aequify and is only released after you confirm the agreed work is done.

  • No need to be a paid user: You can use the Marketplace even if you are not on a paid Aequify plan.

Try Advisor Marketplace

The big upgrade: secure data sharing (built for expats)

If you are an Aequify user, you can share your financial data with your advisor in a few clicks. No downloading bank statements, no messy spreadsheets, and no sending sensitive files over email.

To keep it secure, advisors view shared data through our Advisor Portal, which includes:

  • 2FA (two-step login) for advisor access

  • Watermarked PDF downloads

  • Download logs so there is a clear record of when files were exported

You stay in control. You can revoke access anytime and see when your data was viewed.

How to try it: Go to Aequify advisor Marketplace → choose an advisor → fill the short questionnaire → request a consult/quote. Many advisors offer a free first call.

We are recruiting more tax advisors. If you work with a great expat advisor, tell us (support@aequify.com) and we will bring them onboard!

2. Bank Statement Uploads

Not every bank makes it easy to connect to an app. If your bank is old-fashioned or in a country we don't fully support yet, we have a fix.

  • What it is: You can now drag and drop your PDF or CSV bank statements directly into Aequify.

  • The Benefit: Our AI reads the statement, pulls out the transactions, and categorizes them for your taxes. This is perfect for filling out those pesky FBAR forms where you need your "highest balance of the year."

How to try it: Go to Aequify Transaction page and click the upload button. It will do the rest.

3. Tax Outlook (your cross-border tax forecast)

Most expats do not know what they owe until filing time. That is when it is hardest to plan.

What it is: Aequify builds the first Tax Outlook tool for expats that gives you a personalized tax forecast across countries for 2026, based on your accounts and your tax profile.

How it works:

  • It looks at your worldwide income and transactions.

  • It applies relevant tax treaties, plus common deductions and exclusions that may apply based on your profile.

  • To help you spot possible relief or credits, it matches transactions to potential deductions and exclusions, so you can review them instead of hunting manually.

What you get: A clear view of:

  • Estimated total tax across countries

  • What you may have already paid

  • What may still be due

Current coverage: US↔Canada, US↔UK, and US expat scenarios. More country coverage is coming.

  • Household View: Soon, you can invite your partner to your Aequify account. You’ll be able to see your combined net worth and expenses in one dashboard.

  • Spain Modelo 720: We know this form is a nightmare for expats in Spain. We are working on automating data processing so you and your advisor can complete it with a few clicks, just like FBAR.

  • More Banks: We are expanding our coverage to include more investment and pension accounts across the EU.
